The Beauty Book - Nancy Rue

Every day we are bombarded with the world view of what beauty is.  Young girls are more often than not faced with themselves as “ordinary” rather than the perfect masterpieces that God has designed them to be.  Rue aims to filter the truth out of the lies of the world’s fickle idea of beauty and allows young girls to see themselves through the lens of the master designer.  An engaging book – young girls are given the opportunity of exploring God’s idea of their very unique beauty (no matter what they look like) in an engaging and fun way.

Packed with scripture, specific to image issues that we face, beauty tips and interesting tips, this book keeps the reader involved and thinking.  A fun read aimed at tweens and teens (and good for us older girls too).   Nancy Rue keeps us entertained and thinking about the truth of beauty in God’s eyes even after we’ve closed the book.  Highly recommended to keep girls believing the truth about themselves and how God made them just the way he wanted them to be.

Proverbs Reconstructed - Gus Dallas - West Bow Press

A good job at sorting Proverbs into categories and alphabetical order
I have to say that I did have high hopes for this book but it didn't meet my expectations.  Have had some good teachers elaborate on the book of Proverbs, and making each Proverb the beautiful gem that it was meant to be in our understanding, this book unfortunately left me cold.  Perhaps my expectations were out of the bounds of what this book was meant to be but as I reviewed it today, I felt that so much more could have been done to reconstruct and illuminate the book of Proverbs - as the author stated in his preface, the book of Proverbs is a difficult book to understand but I don't feel Gus Dallas did Proverbs the justice it deserved.

My e-book format that I reviewed was well set out and very little in the way of typo's that I could pick up.  The book is alphabetized by subject e.g. abomination, adultery, adversity and so on and lists each proverb under it's particular category.  A good effort but no fire I am afraid.

Heaven in Her Arms - Catherine Hickem (Thomas Nelson Publishers)

Revealing that a woman's heart is important to the Father.

A very moving probe into the life of Mary - the woman God chose to be mother to Jesus.
Hickem delves into the scriptures surrounding this largely "under" studied and appreciated character of the Bible.   From the angel Gabriel's visit to Mary, announcing God's plan for her, we follow her right through to the last mention of Mary in the book of Acts where she along with all the other followers of Jesus, awaited the Holy Spirit's visit.

I have to admit that, other than the annual Christmas story being brought to mind (with Mary as one of the lead players in the story), I have never really thought about the significance of this woman in scripture - as a woman and as a mother. She is important because God chose her to be the ultimate mother in the history of the world.  Whilst this book's central theme is motherhood, I found many seeds of truth that can be applied to all factor's of today's woman's life. This book specifically spoke to me in the journey that I am on now - helping me (as God does) to see with a spiritual vision how His truth applies to all aspects of my own life.

Hickem takes us along with her through Mary's life in a profound way.  She exposes scriptural truth in the spirit of Mary and how this woman translates into God's plans for women today. Accompanied by a Bible Study, probing chapter by chapter, this book is a must read for any woman, whether on the journey of motherhood or not.  A well written, must read.
